£175,000 paid to fraudsters after spate of scam emails in Guernsey

People in Guernsey are being urged to be wary of fraudsters, after six islanders paid £175,000 to the wrong people.

In two of the cases businesses were emailed invoices that appeared to be from legitimate suppliers, but included incorrect bank details.

Guernsey's Financial Investigations Unit says it has received 11 reports of mandate fraud in the last seven weeks.

More than £1M would have been paid to fraudsters, if all attempts had been successful.

Only some of the victims have received a refund from their banks.

Anyone who suspects a payment has been made to a fraudulent account, is encouraged to contact their bank and the FIU on 01481 725111.
